How Does The TikTok Algorithm Work?

The social media platform, TikTok, was released 7 years ago and since then has it gained enormous attention and a huge - and growing - audience. A lot of creators confirmed that it’s easier to “blow up” on TikTok than on Instagram due to its current stagnant algorithm.

If you are wondering how to do it too and how to be as successful as other content creators on the platform then you’ve come to the right place! In this article, we will show you a few tips which will help you grow your TikTok account fast based on the latest algorithm update.

The following steps will aid you in creating successful TikTok content based on its multifaceted algorithm.

1. Pick your niche

To activate the TikTok algorithm, you must pick a topic you want to be associated with. TikTok has to “sort” the creators into certain categories because of the “recommendation” system. Think about anything you like: is it travelling, fitness, self-development, or technology? Pick a main topic and focus your content only on that single theme.

2. Post 2-5x times a day

TikTok has to notice that you are an active user and so, posting consistently is the key! You can’t expect to go viral if you post only once a week; TikTok wants to see active users and those are most commonly being pushed onto the “For You” page section on the app.

3. Combine trends and personalised videos

Trends can help you a lot in the beginning to get a good base audience. However, since TikTok has grown to over 60 million users in 2022, the algorithm has become a bit pickier about which videos are being shown to the masses more. Therefore, you should create video content which shows your true persona. For example, you can make videos where you talk in-depth about the topic you choose (as mentioned in step 1).

A small tip: Add on-screen text in the talking videos! Small creators usually don’t have the availability to turn on the “caption” mode which TikTok provides, and not everyone is a native English speaker, so the text paired with the given speech can make a huge difference for viewers and keep them engaged for longer.

4. Use popular sounds

Trending sounds can push your content to an even wider audience. You may be asking yourself “how can I find out which sound is trending and which isn’t?”. We can help you out with choosing audios that will appeal to the TikTok algorithm below!

Firstly, look at the number of times an audio has been used. The selected sound should have been used at least 3K times (that’s how you know the algorithm has chosen it) and up to (at maximum) 100K which will give you a slimmer chance to perform well.

Secondly, take a look at the newest four or five videos uploaded under the sound. If the sound hasn’t been used in the last 5 days it’s possible that the sound isn’t trending anymore.

And lastly, search for a TikTok strategist! These are creators who analyse the current TikTok algorithm for you, and by following their content you can save a lot of time looking for trending sounds. Some TikTok strategists include @maximizedgrowth, @caitlinjenco, or @secretsocialari.

5. Hashtags are your friends

To show the TikTok algorithm which “category” your content should be part of, add relevant hashtags that deal with the topic at hand. There isn’t a set number you should use but make sure these are appropriate and applicable to the video content that you’re posting.

6. Quality first

In the second part, we mentioned that you should be posting at least twice a day but it’s also important to provide valuable and quality content. If you can’t manage to make TikTok videos every single day, prepare some of them in advance. Our recommendation would be to do this 2 or 3 days in advance, at maximum, to ensure that you’re keeping up with what’s popular and liked by the TikTok algorithm.

7. Be patient and don’t give up

Many creators usually give up within one or two weeks because they don’t see any results. However, you have to take into account that TikTok will only notice you AFTER two weeks and only THEN will your videos have the chance to go viral. As we’ve heard many times “it’s all about discipline and consistency”, and TikTok is no exception to that rule.

We hope that these tips and algorithm insights have helped you and that you will apply them to your TikTok content.
